To arouse the students’ interest in the Olympic Games and get them to understand the Olympic spirit better.

Teaching and learning Procedures:

StepI. Warming up

1.Lead in the lesson by listening to the songs of You and me and Welcome to Beijing

2.Warming up

1)Talk about some basic knowledge.

Question:When we talk about Olympic Games, what can we think of?

show the pictures below

sports events, motto, Olympic flame, host city, Olympic flame

flag, songs, medals, 2008 Beijing Olympics

How much do you know about the Olympic Games?

2)Make a dialogue between Ban Yansong and Headmaster Fu about the knowledge Of The Olympic Games above

Show an example and ask Ss to imitate it.

Step II.Pre-reading

Quiz

1. When did the ancient Olympic Games start?

A. 1896B. 1906C. 776 BC.

2. Where did the ancient Olympic Games start?

A. Athens, Greece        B. Sydney, Australia      C. New York, USA

Introduce: interviewer Pausanias   writer 2000 years ago

1)Ask the Ss to read and listen to the tape and try to grasp the main idea。

Events: more than 250 sports

Winter: skiing, skating

Summer: running races, swimming, sailing and all the team sports

Athletes: men and women   Country :any, for responsibility and honor

Village: reception building ,Stadium and gymnasium

Prize:medals   Motto: swift ,higher and stronger

2) Then talk about the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics.

Similarities

How often: Both are held every four years.

Purpose: Both are held not for money but   for honor.

Spirit:Swifter Higher Stronger

Members: Men are allowed to take part both in ancient and modern Olympics.

Events: Such as running,shooting and throwing

Differences

Hosting the Olympic Games has goodand bad effects .Some people think it is a great honor and a greatresponsibility, while some people think the athletes and sports fans willpollute the city.                 

1)Ask Ss to write downtheir opinions and then ask some Ss to read out .

Give Ss useful words: economy, promote, display ,image,traffic, pollute, cost, environment, bring in , have a good /bad effect on ,
